Indian national burnt in factory fire

A WORKER at a calcium carbide factory in Simpang Pulai was badly burned when gas cylinders exploded in the storage area of the factory on Thursday night.

One of the three workers there at the time, Indian national B. Ganeson, 22, suffered 80% burns on his body and is warded at the Ipoh Hospital’s intensive care unit. His condition is said to be stable.

The three workers were re-filling gas into the cylinders in the storage area where 300 cylinders of industrial oxygen were kept, when the explosion happened at 9.35pm, said Perak traffic chief Supt Wan Abdullah Ishak.

At the height of the fire, which looked like fireworks from afar, villagers nearby claimed that they heard more than 100 explosions.

Ipoh Fire and Rescue Department officer Nazri Zakaria said the cause of the fire was still being investigated.

The factory management declined to comment when contacted.

State Health, Environment and Human Resources Committee chairman A. Sivanesan said he had instructed the state Man-power Department and National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health to investigate.

It is learnt that it was the second explosion at the factory. In the earlier explosion in 2005, a portion of the factory was damaged but no one was injured.
