On the dead battery, attach the positive (red) cable to the battery, but attach the negative (black) cable to a section of bare metal in the engine compartment. Even a nut or bolt end will do.

Pagi Ahad minggu lepas sewaktu kelas hampir bermula di Bangi, saya menerima panggilan telefon seorang rakan yang baru pulang menunaikan haji di Mekah. Beliau yang tinggal di Bangi juga sering mengikut tulisan saya di blog ini, begitu pasti di dalam kereta saya tersedia “jump start cable” dan justeru itu beliau meminta bantuan saya untuk menghidupkan enjin keretanya.

Jump Starting a Car with a Dead Battery Made Simple

It's easy to jump start your car if you have a dead battery. Batteries go dead for all sorts of reasons, but usually it's our fault. This is a good thing, because that means a simple jump-start will get you back on the road with no permanent damage.

What You'll Need:

1. Another car, running
2. Jumper cables
3. Safety glasses
4. Wire brush (optional for cleaning connections)

You'll need to park the running car next to the dead car in such a way that the jumper cables can reach both batteries. If you aren't sure where the batteries are under each hood, take a peek* before you park.

Important TIP:

*Never drive with your hood raised. Not only do you have no visibility, you could damage your hood components or the hood itself.

How To Connect the Jumper Cables to your Battery

Don't be nervous about your battery connections, but also know that it's very important that you do not mix up the cables or you can do serious damage! With both cars parked next to each other, turn both keys to the OFF position. Not only will this protect your car's electrical system from any surges, it's always safer under the hood with the engine off.

Here are the connection steps:

1. Be sure both ignition switches are in the OFF position.
2. Locate the "+" (positive) and "-" (negative) sides of each battery. They should be clearly marked on the battery itself. On newer cars the positive (+) side often has a red cover over the battery post and wires.
3. Attache the red cable to the "+" side of the good battery
4. Attach the other end of the red cable to the "+" side of the dead battery
5. Attach the black cable to the "-" side of the good battery
6. Attach the other end of the black cable to a section of unpainted metal on the dead car. This can be as small as the head of a bolt located nearby.

Important TIPS:

*Attach the jumper cable to the most secure attachment point you can find on the car's permanent battery cables. If they are corroded, it may help to wiggle the jumper cable end around a bit while it's attached to the car's cables or battery.

*You might be tempted to attach it to the "-" side of the dead battery, but this isn't recommended. In the old days, batteries leaked small amounts of acid, which could turn into flammable gas around the battery. This gas could explode if the cable caused a spark just above the battery.

*I have seen some people clamp the negative cable onto the rubber cable covering of the positive side while they walk across to the other car. This is a NO NO. If one of those sharp teeth were to pierce the rubber cover and reach the wires inside, you could do serious electrical damage to one or both vehicles!

Starting the Car With the Dead Battery

Now that you're all set up, it's time to turn some keys. First, start the car with the good battery, and leave it running. If the battery in the dead was was really badly drained, it may help to leave them connected for a minute with the good car running before you try to start the dead car. This will allow a little charge to build up in the dead battery.

Turn the key in the dead car to start and it should fire right up! As long as you don't have any issues with your alternator, you can disconnect the jumper cables right away.

Disconnecting the Jumper Cables:

Disconnecting the jumper cables doesn't need to happen in any specific order, but be sure you don't let the red and black cables touch each other at the end when they are still connected to one battery.*

Important TIPS:

*If you want to be sure, you can disconnect the black (negative) cables first, then go back and disconnect the red. Remember, the red (positive) cables are the ones that can cause a short of they touch the car while they are connected to the battery.

*If the dead car doesn't turn over or turns over very slowly, check to see if your battery or connections are corroded. If they are, sometimes a little wiggling while the cable clamp is connected will make your connection better. Otherwise, it might be a good time to clean your battery connections.

Hujung minggu dua minggu lepas, kebetulan saya tiada apa-apa tugasan hujung minggu, saya bersama keluarga berkunjung ke Ipoh. Kebetulan ketika itu di Dataran MBI terdapat satu karnival dan antara acaranya ialah pertunjukan dan pertandingan kenderaan yang pasti menarik minat saya dan anak lelaki saya.

Semasa bergerak dari gerai ke gerai dan melangkahi padang, saya dapati jaliran-jaliran kabel punca kuasa elektrik dipasang kemas dalam perumah yang diperbuat dari bahan tahan lasak “chequer plate steel”.

Untuk makluman, antara punca kemalangan tertinggi setiap tahun di Malaysia yang dikenal pasti oleh SOCSO ialah “slip and fall”. Selain dari disebabkan kawasan licin (slippery area), terjatuh akibat berpunca dari “loose wire” juga antara penyumbang kepada kemalangan “slip and fall” ini.

Selain dari hazad “loose wire”, hazad elektrik juga berkaitan.

Untuk syarikat event management terutama outdoor, pendekatan sebegini amat digalakkan.

Apa pun peranan pihak berkuasa tempatan yang meluluskan permit juga perlu menitik-beratkan ciri-ciri keselamatan sebegini.

Soket punca elektrik bolehubah tanpa kabel terurai

Paling akhir saya masuk Bilik Mesyuarat di Bangunan Ekonomi UUM ini ialah sekitar pertengahan tahun lepas. Pagi tadi saya ada mesyuarat dengan PNC di bilik ini. Terdapat banyak perubahan di dalam bilik mesyuarat ini.

Antaranya ialah penggunaan soket punca elektrik bolehubah tanpa kabel terurai. Pertama kali saya melihat soket ini ialah di dewan pameran barangan rumah / perabut rumah di Kuala Lumpur. Kali kedua saya melihatnya dipasang di banglo sepupu isteri saya, seorang penguasaha kosmetik di Golf Resort Bertam Perdana.

Selain amat sesuai dipasang di dinding, soket ini sesuai untuk meja panjang atau meja diatur bentuk-U. Soketnya boleh diubah sepanjang railing yang dipasang. Soket ini juga boleh ditambah bilangannya (dengan kapasiti bekalan).

Penggunaannya mudah. Soket boleh digerakkan (dilaras) mengikut panjang kabel alatan eletronik yang digunakan. Soket diketatkan dengan cara memusingnya (gerakan ikut jam - on / gerakan lawan jam - off).

Dengan penggunaan soket punca elektrik bolehubah tanpa kabel terurai ini tiada lagi loose cable yang berselirat atas lantai.

Mungkin kos tinggi jika dibandingkan dengan extansion wire tetapi berbaloi untuk masa jangka panjang demi keselamatan pengguna.

Jika ianya dikunci untuk keselamatan, memang patut diberi pujian penjaga plug punca kuasa ini. Sementelah kedudukannya begitu hampir ke aras lantai. Kemungkinan ianya disalahguna terutama oleh kanak-kanak memang ada.

Kejutan elektrik – apakah persediaan anda?

Kejutan atau kebocoran elektrik adalah kemalangan yang boleh membawa maut. Malah mereka yang ingin membantu mangsa juga seringkali teralpa dengan sifat elektrik yang boleh mengalir ke tubuh mereka yang ingin menyelamat ini jika tiada sebarang perlindungan dan persediaan peralatan bantuan.

Kejutan atau kebocoran elektrik di tempat yang berair adalah lebih berisiko jika dibandingkan di tempat kering.

Kunjungan saya di Pusat Servis Proton Edar di Auto City Juru pagi tadi memberi satu pengajaran yang berguna. Di dinding Pusat Servis ini tersangkut satu tongkat rotan dengan label ”Equipment For Short Circuit”. Penggunaan jalur berbelang kuning hitam melengkapkan lagi makluman ini.

Sekurang-kurangnya apabila berlaku kejutan dan kebocoran elektrik, pekerja-pekerja di Pusat Servis Proton Edar di Auto City Juru ini sudah bersedia dengan peralatan tongkat rotan ini. Tidaklah menerpa mencapai apa-apa benda yang mungkin bahan yang masih boleh mengalirkan arus elektrik.

Penggunaan tongkat rotan untuk menyelamat mangsa kejutan elektrik atau kebocoran elektrik adalah langkah terbaik kerana hujung yang berpenyangkut itu membolehkan mangsa memegangnya, berpaut kepadanya atau ditarik (disangkut). Begitu juga untuk menjarakkan kabel-kabel elektrik yang mengalami litar pintas, penyangkut ini dengan mudah boleh mengaitkan salah satu kabel tersebut.

Ingatlah, apabila ”berperjalanan” banyak yang boleh kita lihat dan dipelajari. Kata orang; jauh perjalanan, luas pengalaman.

Kuching: Three Telekom Malaysia contractors were killed and another injured when the telephone pole they were replacing accidentally touched a nearby electric cable in Stutong Baru yesterday.

Davendra Sani Asan, 28, Isaac Elkana, 34, and Philips Loven, 25, were killed on the spot in the 5.50pm incident. Their colleague, Cornelies Engki, 18, sustained minor injuries.Witnesses said the three men were working without safety gear when the tragedy struck. Some saw them pulling down the old telephone cables with their bare hands.One of the contractors' colleagues, Josey Mahay, said he was installing telephone cables at a house nearby when the incident occurred.


"I heard what sounded like a blast and someone calling for help.

"I ran out of the house I was working in but it was too late. They were already dead."Josey confirmed that the men were not wearing safety gear while working."It is normal for us," he said.


District police chief Assistant Commissioner Wong Wai Loong said the bodies of the men were sent to Sarawak General Hospital for a post-mortem.

Labourers electrocuted to death

Kuching Three labourers were electrocuted to death when they were replacing a wooden telephone post with a steel one at the Stutong Resettlement Scheme here yesterday.

Issac Elkana, 31, his nephew Davendra Sani Asan, 21, and Philipos Loren, 18, all from Kampung Stutong, were raising the steel post into position when it accidentally hit the overhead electricity cables. They were killed instantly.

Issac leaves a wife and five children, while Davendra had just got married a few months ago.

The three were among a group of six workers of a Telekom subcontractor.

The other three were unhurt.

Kuching: Tiga pekerja kontrak Telekom Malaysia (TM) maut terkena renjatan elektrik selepas tiang telefon yang cuba ditegakkan tumbang sebelum terkena kabel Sarawak Elektrik Berhad (SEB), di Stutong Baru, di sini petang semalam. Dalam kejadian jam 5 petang itu, Davendra Sani Asan, 28; Isaac Elkana, 34, dan Philips Loven, 25, semuanya dari Kampung Stutong, disahkan mati di tempat kejadian, manakala seorang lagi rakan mereka, Cornelius Engki, 18, cedera kaki kanan.

Ketua Polis Daerah Kuching, Asisten Komisioner Wong Wai Loong, berkata kumpulan pekerja kontrak TM berkenaan dipercayai cuba menggantikan tiang telefon lama yang patah secara manual.


"Mangsa yang maut dipercayai memegang tiang besi berkenaan secara terus, manakala pekerja lain hanya membantu menarik tiang menggunakan tali sebelum tumbang dan mengenai kabel elektrik.

"Akibat renjatan elektrik, tiga mangsa yang maut terpelanting kira-kira tiga meter, manakala seorang lagi melecur kaki kanan," katanya ketika ditemui di tempat kejadian.

Wong berkata, pihaknya mengklasifikasikan kes sebagai kematian mengejut namun tidak menolak kecuaian sebagai punca utama dengan pihak kontraktor tidak menggunakan jentera bagi menaikkan tiang berkenaan.


"Polis akan menyiasat kes ini dan jika ada unsur kecuaian, majikan boleh didakwa kerana tidak mematuhi prosedur kerja mengikut undang-undang sehingga menyebabkan kematian," katanya.

Mayat mangsa dihantar ke Rumah Mayat, Hospital Umum Kuching (HUS) dengan bedah siasat dijangka dilakukan selewat-lewatnya petang ini sebelum ahli keluarga dibenarkan menuntut jenazah.


Sementara itu seorang pekerja, Josey Mahay, 21, berkata kejadian berlaku cepat dengan pekerja lain berdekatan kumpulan yang sedang menaikkan tiang tidak dapat berbuat apa-apa.

"Saya berada dalam lori sebelum terdengar bunyi letupan kecil dengan tiga rakan yang sedang cuba menaikkan tiang sudah terbaring atas tanah manakala Cornelius menjerit kesakitan.


"Pihak syarikat memang ada membekalkan sarung tangan tetapi mereka mungkin tidak memakainya kerana menjadi kebiasaan tugas menaikkan tiang tidak lama serta tidak berbahaya," katanya.

13A Safety Plug Key

Akhirnya saya berjaya mendapat penutup punca kuasa elektrik pada dinding ini atau nama tepatnya adalah “13A Safety Plug Key”. Seorang pelajar saya telah membelinya di kedai berhampiran tempat tinggalnya.

Ramai juga yang menghubungi saya. Penutup ini juga turut dijual di Tesco tetapi bukan dipamerkan di bahagian elektrik ataupun bahagian “hardware”, ianya terdapat di barangan perkakasan dapur (utensil)!

Pada pandangan saya sebagai pengamal OSH, penutup ini tidak begitu sesuai dalam bentuk berwarna-warna. Ia boleh mendatangkan minat kepada anak kecil untuk mengambilnya.

Bagaimanapun jika di rumah anda ada anak kecil dan punca kuasa elektrik di dinding dipasang di bahagian menghampirii lantai, penutup ini adalah kemestian.

Danger of Energy Saving Bulb

Energy-saving light bulbs are so dangerous that everyone must leave the room for at least 15 minutes if one falls to the floor and breaks, a Government department warned yesterday. The startling alert came as health experts also warned that toxic mercury inside the bulbs can aggravate a range of problems including migraines and dizziness. A leading dermatologist said tens of thousands of people with skin complaints will find it hard to tolerate being near the bulbs as they cause conditions such as eczema to flare up.

The Department for Environment warned shards of glass from broken bulbs should not be vacuumed up but instead swept away by someone wearing rubber gloves to protect them from the bulb's mercury content.

In addition, it said care should be taken not to inhale any dust and the broken pieces should be put in a sealed plastic bag for disposal at a council dump & not a normal household bin.

None of this advice, however, is printed on the packaging the new-style bulbs are sold in. There are also worries over how the bulbs will be disposed of.

Under new regulations for hazardous waste, councils are obliged to recycle them. At present, they should be placed in special bins also used for batteries at a council dump. But in future, councils will have to provide a collection service or install special recycling banks for the bulbs.

There are fears that without a proper disposal system, the mercury content could contaminate water supplies.

Independent environmental scientist Dr David Spurgeon warned yesterday: 'Because these light bulbs contain small amounts of mercury, they could cause a problem if disposed of in a normal bin.

'It is possible that the mercury could be released into the air or from land-fill when they are released into the wider environment. That is a concern, because mercury is a well-known toxic substance.'

And dermatologist Dr John Hawk, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that some people already find it difficult to tolerate the fluorescent-strip lighting that is widely used in schools and offices, which works in the same way as the eco-friendly bulbs. He said: 'Fluorescent lights seem to have some sort of ionising characteristic where they affect the air around them.

'This does affect a certain number of people, probably tens of thousands, in Britain , whose ailments flare up just by being close to them. Certain forms of eczema, some of which are very common, do flare up badly anywhere near fluorescent lights, so these people have to just be around incandescent (old-style) lighting.'

It's ironic that at a time when we can't get mercury thermometers any more we are now to have mercury light bulbs forced upon us. Inhaling hot mercury vapour from a smashed bulb is poisonous and can cause a lot of harm. Some people are very sensitive to mercury and even a tiny amount can cause them damage.

Whowever created that sign at the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is a total idiot, they have put the symbol for radiation on it(mercury is not radioactive), rather than the biohazard symbol. Just goes to show they are still as incompetent as ever.

Environmentally friendly? If the general public had been informed correctly about the use of mercury in these new bulbs, we would never have bought the rotten things. WHAT A STUPID IDEA TO USE MERCURY!

Merely sweeping up the debris won't sweep up the mercury since it too dense to be swept. And if it spills on a wood or carpeted floor the mercury will fall into the cracks.

The mercury must be chemically reacted to form a non-toxic dust which can be vacuumed up. The vacuum cleaner must have a HEPA (High efficiency particulate arrestance] filer to trap any minute unreacted particles of mercury.

To have a mercury spill in a small room cleaned up professionally costs about $2000 in the USA.

I said this the other day! These things are a hazard. We should all refuse to use them if they become a 'legal' requirement. I, for one, would never use them, they are a menace. How are elderly people (for example) going to cope with them. They should be banned, right now!

How can it be environmentally friendly if mercury poisoning might occur? What happened to safety first? The old fashioned bulb would not need to have the room evacuated if it breaks. If this supposedly environmentally friendly bulb is not user friendly, then what is the POINT? The costs of using such a bulb is not economically or even environmentally viable to all the households in the country. The govt has shown itself to be fried...probably broke a few of these environmentally friendly bulbs in Parliament. The whole lot of them have totally become lame brained.

Lighting is a very small part of the total electrical load. Banning incandescent lamps in favour of fluorescents will make very little difference. if people want to use fluorescent lamps let them, but don't ban incandescent lamps. it is intersting that when the USA, & Canada extended daylight saving period recently to save energy. no savings were attained.- Jim Brennand, Regina Canada

Yes - they are not healthy. A study in the 1980s showed that (unfortunately it isn't online). After the study, a school district in Canada decided to test it for themselves. The replaced all the fluorescent lighting with a more natural form light bulb. GPAs when up, absenteeism went down, even among the teachers. Full Spectrum Lighting is a better choice. It contains the spectrum the human body needs to function properly. See articles about it at

Also, YES, fluorescent has ALWAYS contained mercury, even the compact ones that Gore is trying to shove down our throats. They are a disposal nightmare - hazardous waste. They are not supposed to be put in regular garbage, but I have yet to see a recycling location for burnt out fluorescents. NEVER break a fluorescent when you dispose of it. Always save them and take them to a hazardous waste site. Better yet, don't buy them at all. Then we won't be contributing to the mercurization of the planet.

There are many other appropriate ways to save energy and the planet - try line drying your laundry for a much bigger energy savings than a compact fluorescent. Reduce the wattage in your fixtures from 60 - 45, that will make a big difference. Look into LED lighting. Turn off lights you aren't using! The people across the road from us have every light on 24/7. Our house rarely even looks like we are home after dark. Paint your walls a bright color, leave curtains and blinds open during the day. White, semi-gloss ceilings will reflect light so you don't need high wattage bulbs. Avoid dark cabinets and furniture. We used to live in what was akin to a cave when we bought our house. It is now, light, bright and rarely in need of a light turned on. There are better ways than putting mercury in our environment. Try them.

Tiub lampu kalimatang atau Flourescent Tube adalah antara barangan buangan berjadual yang mempunyai peruntukan dalam Akta Kualiti Alam. Ini bermakna Flourescent Tube yang terpakai tidak boleh dilupuskan atau dibuang ke tempat perlupusan sampah biasa.

Semasa di Celestica Kulim Hi Tech, saya berjaya menambahsyarat kepada pembekal atau pembaiki utiliti elekterikal agar mengambil semula Flourescent Tube yang terpakai semasa mereka memasang Flourescent Tube yang baru. Amalan ini saya serapkan semasa menjadi pengurus di Tasek Cement di Ipoh.

Bagaimanapun saya difahamkan kini hanya syarikat-syarikat yang berdaftar dengan Jabatan Alam Sekitar sebagai pengumpul dan penyimpan barangan buangan berjadual Flourescent Tube sahaja yang boleh mengambil untuk tujuan perlupusan Flourescent Tubes ini. Kebanyakan pembekal atau pembaiki utiliti elektrik bukanlah syarikat yang berdaftar untuk tujuan pengumpulan dan penyimpanan barangan berjadual Flourescent Tubes ini.

Syarikat-syarikat besar seperti industri perkilangan tidak begitu bermasalah untuk mematuhi perundangan ini.

Persoalannya; bagaimana pula dengan kegunaan domestik dan jabatan kerajaan? Sebagai contoh gambar di atas saya ambil di sebuah bilik air jabatan kerajaan.

Perlaksanaan perundangan hendaklah meliputi semua organisasi, syarikat dan pengguna. Kita tidak mahu adannya dua standard dalam hal-hal sebegini. Keperihatinan terhadap alam sekitar perlu bermula dari dalam rumah pengguna, bukannya bermula dari dalam industri.

Sebagai cadangan, kerajaan melalui Jabatan Alam Sekitar perlu mengadakan pusat pengumpulan untuk barangan buangan berjadual Flourescent Tube ini. Untuk lebih effektif mungkin boleh diberikan rebet jika dikembalikan atau dihantar Flourescent Tube yang sudah terpakai ini.

Kesedaran juga perlu dipertingkatkan. Kempen Kitar Semula umpamanya yang melibatkan penggunaan tong-tong sampah yang berasingan agak mengecewakan kerana ada mereka yang terlibat dalam pengumpulan bersepadu bahan-bahan buangan ini mencampurkannya di dalam lori yang sama.

Kitar semula hari ini untuk generasi akan datang.

Ujian kebocoran untuk cerek elektrik?

Cerek keluli yang “menjerang” air di atas dapur minyak tanah itu mula berasap. Tidak lama selepas itu wisel mula berbunyi nyaring. Kemudiannya emak mematikan api dapur minyak tanah. (Ketika itu di kampong nenek saya masih menggunakan dapur kayu)

Tiba-tiba kerinduan bunyi wisel itu terbangkit di ingatan saya.

Wisel yang diaktifkan oleh wap air itu adalah satu penggera yang terbaik ketika itu. Terima kasih kepada teknologi yang memungkinkan dapur minyak tanah digantikan dengan gas cecair. Kemudiannya teknologi dipertingkatkan dengan cerek air berkuasa elektrik yang membolehkannya mempunyai penggera mematikan kuasa elektrik apabila air sudah mendidih.

Setiap kali saya membeli cerek elektrik saya pastikan ianya mempunyai beberapa penggera tambahan seperti lampu di suis yang menunjukkan ianya sedang beroperasi. Dan juga tingkap sesalur sisi lutsinar yang memudahkan aras air dikenalpasti.

Kebiasaannya saya hanya meminta penjual di mana cerek elektrik dibeli itu menguji sama ada bekalan elekrik berfungsi. Ujian yang mudah dengan menyambungkan soket cerek elektrik dan melihat sama ada suis operasinya menyala atau tidak.

Minggu lepas saya membeli sebuah cerek elektrik dari sebuah hyper-market berdekatan dengan rumah saya di Taiping. Setelah diuji sama ada bekalan elektriknya berfungsi atau tidak, saya membuat bayaran.

Saya hanya menyedari ada yang tidak kena pada cerek elektrik apabila terdapat lelehan air setiap kali saya atau isteri saya menggunakannya. Risau juga melihatkan lelehan ai di bahagian tapak perumah cerek elektrik tersebut.

Dengan membuat pemerhatian teliti, saya dapati lelehan air itu keluar dari bahagian bawah tingkap sesalur sisi lutsinar. Bahagian bawah salur itu diketatkan dengan bahan yang diperbuat dari getah.

Pagi tadi saya membawa cerek elektrik itu untuk ditukar semula di hyper-market yang saya beli.

Penjual di situ memaklumkan saya boleh membuat ujian kebocoran jika membeli cerek elektrik.

Inilah kali pertama saya mendengar ujian kebocoran boleh terhadap cerek elektrik sebelum pembelian dibuat.

Dan ini menjadi ingatan keselamatan kepada saya dan saya harap anda juga membuat ujian kebocoran jika membeli cerek elektrik di masa akan datang.
